By Simon Clements ASG Washington Boys Basketball

Jj Kern, an accomplished figure in the world of sports, brings an unparalleled reputation to his new role as Talent Scout for the ASG Washington Boys Basketball event in Seattle. With a storied history in athletics, Coach Kern's resume speaks volumes. As a high school athlete, he was a standout in football, basketball, and track. Notably, he was the second leading scorer in his basketball conference for two consecutive years, a testament to his skill and dedication. His prowess on the gridiron continued at Central Lakes College, where he played football for two years, before earning a two-year scholarship to Minot State for both track and football.

Kern's influence extends beyond his playing days. He played semi-pro football for two years with the Alexandria Mustangs and went on to own successful teams, such as the Brainerd Lumberjacks, Tri City Northstars, and Lakes Area Snowmen, winning six league championships. An innovator in the semi-pro arena, he has been at the helm of the Midwest Professional Football League (MPFL) since 2009, overseeing events that have featured the talents of over 3,000 athletes, including collaborations with former NFL stars like Chuck Foreman and Tommy Kramer.

In his new position, Kern will identify standout middle school athletes across Washington for the 2026 All State Game. "Hard work pays off and make plays not excuses is what I am about and helping develop some toughness," said Coach Kern. This philosophy underscores his commitment to nurturing raw talent and ensuring that deserving athletes receive the spotlight, irrespective of their geographical or financial backgrounds.

Coach Kern's diverse experience in both football and basketball, along with his extensive coaching history spanning 25 years, positions him as a key validator within the Washington football community. By cutting through the hype, he ensures that opportunities are based on merit, helping young athletes rise from obscurity to prominence. His role is pivotal in connecting small-town talents with broader recognition, potentially shaping the future of young athletes across the state.
